12-09-2010 a City of las Cruces 1 PEOPLE NELPINO PEOPLE 2 3 Minutes 4 LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING 5 Thursday, December 9, 2010 6 7 1 Call to Order—President Diana Youngren called the meeting to order at 3.00 p.m. 8 Board Members Present: President Diana Youngren, Vice-President Ford Ballard, Secretary 9 Debora Rmdge; Members Ellen Young, Susan Fletcher, Robert Branshaw, and Terry Johnston. 10 Others in attendance were Public Services Director Lori Grumet and Library Administrator 11 Lynette Schurdevin. 12 2. Review of October 28, 2010 minutes. Corrections were made as to form and content. 13 Motion was made and seconded to approve minutes as corrected, motion passed. 14 1 Committee Report 15 a. Friends of the Library— 16 1. There are thirty paid members, 11 new members. The group is discussing 17 raising the annual dues amount. 18 11. The Friends have 70 cook books left. 19 iii. Marge had a program on Africa, selling prints of animals. She donated the 20 profits to purchase puppets for the children's program. 21 iv Tickets are still available for the Quilt drawing. 22 v Friends will meet on the 15th of December 1 1 2. Library Administrator's Report-In addition to the published Monthly Administrators 2 report, Lynette reported the following: 3 a. Branigan Library is partnering with the State Library in sponsoring Fast Forward 4 New Mexico, a program to educate patrons in using computers and the internet, 5 which includes fob searching. Many of the classes are already taught at Branigan 6 Library A kick-off meeting for the program will be held on January 22nd 7 b Lynette spoke with Dr Sanchez of the Las Cruces Public Schools regarding the 8 library at San Andres High School. She is working with Mayor Barazza on a 9 kick-off celebration January 7h 10 c. Children's Wing project progressing well with the pad in place. 11 d. Circulation desk and workroom is on target for completion. Tear down of old 12 desk is scheduled to take place next week. Upgrade of wiring for the reference is 13 almost complete. Display panels should be in soon and set up soon, Lynette will 14 work with Udell on setting up information. 15 e. Mark Pendleton is looking at Community Center libraries to help develop 16 programs at the various locations. Some centers are not as active as others. 17 Lynette will be contacting the County regarding agreed input into the program and 18 the ILL program. 19 f. Lynette has submitted her budget request to the City of Las Cruces through Lon 20 Grumet. In the request she suggested several options for managed reductions. 21 Lon and Lynette encouraged all to contact Legislators to consider,positively, 22 quality of life program budgets. 2 I g. Lynette will be attending Library Legislative Day January 27th She will prepare 2 packets for the State Legislators. Board members may be invited to attend 3 depending on budget constraints. 4 h. Library Supervisor job announcement closed December 13th,there were 24 5 applications. HR will filter and send the applications within the next few days. 6 Lynette has chosen an interview committee. Elise Vidal has been temporarily 7 promoted to fill this position until a permanent supervisor is hired. 8 1. State Library Aid has been allocated and sent to City Council for approval. 9 J Children's Department will be filmed doing a puppet show and short story time to 10 include on the new website. 11 k. 75th Anniversary went well with about 80 in attendance. Lynette will be 12 composing a report with photos. Scrapbooks are in the Terrace Gallery and 13 original photos will be displayed on the walls. Teddy bear sleepover is on the 14 website. 15 1. The Mayor hosted a meeting of the Southwest New Mexico Municipal Managers 16 in the Library's Roadrunner Room. 17 3 Unfinished Business—none noted 18 4 Strategic Plan—Library on task with meeting this year's goals. The City of Las Cruces 19 strategic Plan is available on the City's web site and includes the Library's plan. Lynette 20 will print out a copy for the next Board meeting. 21 5 New Business 22 a. Calendar for the next year was reviewed. Due to the Library Legislative Day, 23 January 2011's meeting day will be moved to the 20th instead of the 27th Motion 24 was made and seconded to approve the calendar as corrected, motion passed. 3 1 6. Announcements— 2 a. Lon Announced that on Monday,January 13th,the Council will vote to accept a 3 contract with Robert Garza to be the City Manager beginning January 1, 2011 4 b. Lynette announced the State Library is doing away with cassette tapes. 5 c.
