04-17-2014 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MEETING April 17, 2014 1 The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Meeting was held on April 17, 2014, at 2 Meerscheidt Recreation Center, 1600 E. Hadley, Las Cruces, NM. 3 4 PARKS & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: 5 Mr. Ron Camunez, Board Chair 6 Ms. Elizabeth Brown 7 Mr. Eli Guzman 8 Mrs. Fran Witt 9 10 PARKS & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS ABSENT: 11 Ms. Dawn Rue 12 Mr. Mark O'Neill 13 14 OTHERS PRESENT: 15 Mr. Mark Johnston, Director Parks & Recreation 16 Ms. Hazel Nevarez, PRAB Recording Secretary 17 Mr. Tim Fulton, Parks Administrator 18 Ms. Sonya Delgado, Recreation Administrator 19 Ms. Rochelle Miller-Hernandez, Convention Sales Manager 20 Mr. Jake Gutierrez, Recreation Services Manager 21 22 The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. by Chairman Camunez and he 23 recognized the meeting as having a legal quorum. 24 25 I. Introductions 26 27 Board Members introduced themselves and stated the district they represent. Mr. 28 Camunez introduced and welcomed Mrs. Fran Witt as the new District 6 Parks & 29 Recreation Advisory Board Member. 30 31 It. Conflict of Interest 32 33 No conflict of interest 34 35 III. Approval of Minutes 36 37 Minutes stand approved for the March 20, 2014 meeting as presented. 38 39 IV. Old Business 40 41 Ms. Rochelle Miller-Hernandez of the Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) was present 42 to introduce us to their"Bring It Home Program". 1 1 2 Mrs. Hernandez started with a brief synopsis of the Conventions & Visitors Bureau's 3 goals, to bring tourist, conventions, sport events, awareness to our community. 4 Funded by the lodger's tax, they are able to provide free services such as bid 5 processes, venue, transportation, media assistant to these individuals. Ms. Hernandez 6 works with bringing conferences to Las Cruces. Mr. Ed Carnathan is in charge of 7 bringing sporting events to Las Cruces. 8 9 The Bring It Home campaign is a referral program that rewards citizens of Las Cruces 10 to help invite local, state or national associations to hold their next meeting, convention 11 or event in Las Cruces. Once a booking is made, citizens are eligible to receive a Visa 12 Gift Card based on the number of room nights booked. They can receive up to $1,000. 13 To qualify for the Bring It Home Campaign, CVB needs to be informed during the 14 process of bringing the event to Las Cruces, not after. 15 16 V. New Business 17 18 A. Introduction of Mr. Timothy Fulton, New Parks Administrator 19 20 Mr. Johnston introduced Tim Fulton as our new Parks Administrator. Mr. Johnston 21 also publicly thanked Mr. Rudy Trevino for covering as Acting Parks Administrator for 22 almost a solid year and doing an excellent job. 23 24 Mr. Fulton gave a brief synopsis of his background work experience in Parks and 25 Recreation. 26 27 Mr. Camunez welcomed Mr. Fulton and expressed the Boards appreciation to Mr. 28 Rudy Trevino. 29 30 31 VI. Public Comment 32 33 Ms. Hazel Nevarez advised the Board that she reformatted the Parks & Recreation 34 Report to the Board so they could see upcoming events, pending, updates and 35 accomplishments altogether by department. She also advised she included in their 36 packet an updated Parks & Recreation Advisory Board Members report. 37 38 Jake Gutierrez, Athletics manager and of Meerscheidt Recreation Center advised 39 Board Members there is a lot going on from youth and adult stand point as well as 40 facility standpoint such as new flooring, new wall pads for safety to new sprinkler 41 systems.. He also provided the Board with a trifold of 2014 Las Cruces Athletic 42 Programs. 43 44 Member Comments 45 2 1 Mr. Guzman welcomed Ms. Hernandez and thanked her for her presentation on the 2 Bring It Home program. 3 4 Mr. Camunez requested we provide Mrs. Witt with flip up of maps of all district parks. 5 He advised the Board to visit their district parks as the new term begins to become 6 aware of what is going on in the parks and to find out what people have to say. 7 Mr. Camunez asked how crime activity is at the skate park and BMX and Mr. Johnston 8 advised it is up and down but the police department is helping. 9 10 Mr. Camunez advised the Board that Mr. Johnston did a presentation to council 11 regarding the needs and costs of what our parks need such as a bathroom at Young 12 Park. 13 14 Mr. Camunez asked Parks & Recreation staff to let the Board know when Movies in the 15 Park start and to email them a schedule. Mr. Johnston advised a press release was 16 just developed and should be going out this week. Mr. Johnston advised we may have 17 some on Main Street in addition to Movie in the Park series. Mr. Johnston also advised 18 that Pic Quik has sponsored the Movies in the Park for the entire season. 19 20 Mr. Camunez advised Parks & Recreation staff that if any help is needed with 21 problems in the districts or with sponsorships, to please let the Board know. 22 23 Mr. Camunez asked if Parks & Recreation are Park sponsors of Springfest. Mr. 24 Johnston advised that the event started about 10 years ago and it has been 25 transitioned to be 101-Gold's event and Parks & Recreation assist, staff can leverage 26 what Parks & Recreation has to offer. 27 28 29 VII.
