09-24-1968 320 September 24, 1968 The Board of Trustees of the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library met on Tuesday, September 24, 1968, incthe Librarian's Office. Members present were Mrs. Swartz, Mrs. Roach, Mr. Fielder, Mr. Bunyea, Mr. Taylor, besides the Librarian and Secretary of the Board, Miss Caffey. Mr. Taylor presided. Minutes of the August 27th meeting were approved as read. A portrait of Mr+£� Slhannon painted by his Wife has been deposited at the Library. Mr. Taylor reported that this picture is the property of Mr. Phillips Shannon. Mrs. Reach made the following motion: that the painting J&I*hd to the gtbperRy Urgr nVAllipstWhantbneapdwibc9oame8ti2oithp.- ;lyrafyy". _Ilips S - -�a could be claimed by him at any time or should be returned to him if in the future the portrait is no longer to be hung in the Library. Mrs. Swartz seconded. Motion carried. Miss Caffey reported a gift to the Library of 11 scrapbooks belonging to Mr. E.G. Shannon. Most of the clippings in these books are about Las Cruces. Mr. Taylor instructed the Secretary to write a letter to Mr. Phillips Shannon thanking him for these scrapbooks and to include a copy of these minutes which refer to the Portrait of Mr. Shannon. Miss Caffey read from a copy of the minutes of the City Commission of July 10, 1968( this informationq� i�eived by the Library last week) concerning a proposed,memorial to Mr. Shann1 7Comissioner Johnson moved that the Board's recommendation be accepted, which states "that a suitable memorialization be entered in the official minutes of the City Commission." Commissioner Alexander .. seconded the motion. Commissioner Ferralez requested that the motion be amended to read "That the Library Board be made a committee to designate a suitable memorialization and that they submit it 8& the next meeting; also that,g } que be awarded to Mr. Shannon's son, who was his next of kin. Commissione /°SIf rred and the motion as amended was unanimously VOTED by the Commission." " Mrs. Pcaeh than moved that,in answering the request of the City Commis- - sion, that the Library Board request the Commiss on to have the City place in the Library a memorial plaigue in honor of Mr. Shannon to be placed near the Portrait, , and if possible a copy of the plaque be presented to Mr. Phillips Shannon. Mr. Fielder seconded the motion. Motion carried. The inscription on the-pleggmewilllbe developed by the Library Board, and forwarded totheCi-ty Commission. It .was_the:feeling of the Board that this plaque should included refer to Mr. Shannon's services as City Attorney of Las Cruces. TheSecretarywas Instructed to research the minutes of the Board for information concerning Mr. Shannon. The Board inspected the Library for a proper location for hanging the portrait. It was the unanimous,opinion of the members that the piottre and plaque should be hung on the North wall of the Adult Reading Room, a lighttobe installed over it. Mr. Bunyea moved that this room be designed the Edmond G. Shannon - Memorial Room, and that a plaque be placed therein. Mr. Fielder seconded the motion. Motion carried.
