05-15-19 MSPTF0 City of Las Cruces M O U N T A I N S O F O P P O R T U N I T Y The following are summary minutes for the Mayors Suicide Prevention Taskforce meeting held on Wednesday, May 15, 2019. The meeting was held at City Hall, Room 2007A, 700 N. Main St., Las Cruces, NM. Councilor Kasandra Gandara called the meeting to order at approximately 11:35 a.m. Welcome/Introductions: 1. 7 new guests present at meeting. Review & Consider Approval of Meeting Minutes: 1. April 17, 2019 meeting minutes were reviewed and approved. Discussion Items: 1. Discussed "Open Meetings Act", handout given to everyone to review, need to put Mayor's Suicide Prevention Taskforce Agenda and minutes on city website for public view. 2. Update on Recovery Night: Mari reported that she attended Recovery Night meeting in Santa Fe, NM with their committee. a. Different ideas: Recovery Wall, balloons, "What is Recovery?", proclamation (Councilor Gandara has taken care of this in the past), kid friendly activities b. Funds available. c. Will speakers be available at the Plaza or Chambers, parade to plaza from Chambers. d. Mari suggested/recommended having a sub -committee to plan Recovery Night e. Sally Telles asked about education regarding the signs of abuse, depression, etc... which can lead to suicide I. Councilor Gandara said is through Mental Health First Aid Training. f. Representative from La Casa stated they would like to be heavily involved in the group to help provide education. Reportedly has a child staying at La Casa that attempted to take his life. 3. Discussed Vision, Mission, and Guiding Principles. Sharon asked if this has been approved as she didn't find anything stating that they had. Councilor Gandara reported that they had been approved. Sharon reviewed the "Vision, Mission, and Guiding Principles" with the group. Not everyone has seen a copy. Shannon will provide a copy for the group at next meeting. 4. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) a. Judy Baca from Mesilla Valley Hospital will be having a Mental Health First Aid Training on May 30, 2019 b. Mari proposed that the taskforce schedule their quarterly MHFA meeting for the last two Mondays in June. I. The group says they need more books/manuals ii. Councilor Gandara reported that she will look for a sponsor to help purchase the books. III. Mari will send quote to Councilor Gandara and Shannon. c. Possibly Partner with the Coalition Against Bullying to have a youth focused MHFA in October. d. Ideas to bring MHFA Instructor to training to Las Cruces through CYFD 5. Follow-up on CYFD Letter a. Tabled for next meeting -June 19 6. Discuss "13 Reasons Why" a. No data/response Public Input: 1. Questions were asked, "Are we still the only group in the area?" a. Several members reported there is a school focused group. 2. Robin Rehbein also has a group, they are planning a walk for September 21, 2019. a. Taskforce is willing to collaborate with the different walks and activities. 3. Sally Telles asked what data is available regarding suicide. How do we know we are getting through? a. Councilor Gandara and Eden both reported that the Department of Health has that information. b. What can we do to navigate and utilize the data we have? 4. Luis Barrera shared his story with the group on how he lost his son to suicide and what he is doing now about it. a. Mayor's Taskforce members discussed how they can help Mr. Barrera with the scholarship that he has in his son's name. 5. It was mentioned that only one support group is available to help with grief/dealing with a loved one who died by suicide. 6. How can we bring more groups to the Las Cruces Area? a. Councilor Gandara suggested the "Anna Age Eight" online b. QPR c. Doing public service announcements d. Testimonies e. "More than Sad" f. Mark -Great Conservations Topic Suicide Prevention possibly during the month of September. g. Work as a group to think of essay topics for Mr. Barrera's scholarship 7. Agenda Setting -Sharon to get with Shannon to set a. Group suggested not to put too many items up for discussion b. Put a time limit on topics 8. Next meeting date is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, 2019 9. Adjournment a. Board members moved to adjourn the meeting at 1:40 pm
