10-08-1997VETERANS AFFAIRS ADVISORY BOARD CITY OF LAS CRUCES P.O. DRAWER 2000 LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO 88004 8 October 1997 The board convened at 1400 on the second floor of the City Office Bldg. for a special meeting to approve the layout of the veterans park. Roll call was taken. Present were: Chairman Joseph Heintz, Vice Chairman Warren Rogers, DAV rep Fred Frank, AMVETS rep Noel Cooley, VVA rep Elsa Baker, VFW rep Robert Wiley and American Legion rep Gaston Munguia. The meeting was called by Joni Gutierrez of the City of Las Cruces who presented the new layout of the veterans park. This is on the site north of the original one. The terrain is more favorable and eliminates the large arroyo on the south side. The plan has a 30 vehicle parking area along the north edge. Paved walks which define the large grassed area parallel to Roadrunner Pkwy, a large amphitheater to the center west which looks down on the paved site for ceremonies with a gazebo to its rear. After discussing the overall layout, it was recommended that changes be made in the locations of the deciduous trees and the evergreens. The location of the flagpoles was set at the center rear of the amphitheater and a site to the left of the gazebo site was designated for the future location of playground equipment. There was discussion of some minor details and a vote was taken in favor of approving the plan with all members agreeing. The meeting adjourned at 1455.
