09-27-2011 Las Cruces Veterans Advisory Board Minutes of September 27, 2011 Las Cruces City Hall Open Meeting: The Meeting was called to order at 9:01 a.m., and was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Brown City of Las Cruces Representative Dolores Estrada Recording Secretary Acceptance of the Minutes from regular meeting of August 23,2011 motioned by Larry Orvis and 2nd by Cosme Padilla. Motion passed unanimously. Approval of the Agenda for today's meeting was motioned by Cosme Padilla and 2nd by Frank Luj an. Motion passed unanimously. Old Business Captain Hartman reported that the monument 2nd Engineering Battalion is going to have at Veterans Park was going to be changed from original plans of a castle to a flat monument. Frank Lujan motioned to accept changes and Cosme Padilla 2nd the motion. Motion passed unanimously. Mr. Brown gave a presentation on the Veterans portion of City's Website, what it's going to look like and if any corrections needed to be done. The website is not on-line as of today, is still be worked on by the CLC IT department. Any changes will need to be made through Mr. Brown. An e-mail with the link to the website will be sent to board members for review. Mr. Dasing reported that the Veterans Town Hall meeting was successful and informational. The director from the VA of El Paso, Secretary Hale and Congressman Pierce attended. Meetings will be held quarterly. New Business Ms. Jaime Michaels, the department manager for Dona Ana Health and Human Services. Reported on the First Aid Mental Health training that is being offered through Dona Ana County. The course is a national training and they have 18 certified instructors in Dona Ana County. The instructors will be instructing 20 of the First Aid Mental Health training classes for the county. Purpose is to inform citizens of the different types of mental health and abuse disorders. Ms. Michaels would like to have training specifically tailored for veterans. Consensus of the VAB board is to move forward in conducting training for veterans. The Veterans Day Parade will be on Friday 11/11/11, will start at 9:00 am, staging is at 7:30 am and route will be the same as last year. Public Participation Mr. Turner reported that there are tax exempt forms for those who have not picked them up before it's too late to receive tax cut this year. Reminder, Garrison flag will be raised on October 10. Mark Johnston reported on the Women's Veteran plaque that Highland Enterprises is the company that installs the plaques and will give an update on when that will be. Carol Gaines talked about the Women's Veteran Memorial that the organization will have a memorial at Veterans Park; the organization is raising funds for the memorial. Also, if anyone knows of women that served in the armed forces to let them know about the organization and would like to have their participation. They meet once a month on the Yd Saturday of the month, they have been meeting in a home but, will notify board once they find a public meeting place. Dolores Archuleta reminder Centennial Parade is on January 7,2012. Joe Martinez of Congressman Steve Pearce office stated that they have had the 1 meetini for the Bataan March for next year, which will be the 70th year since the fall and the 20 year that Bataan March has been held at WSMR. And the 10th year for the monument at Veterans Park,would like the original committee members to partake in the anniversary celebration, on Saturday March 24, 2012. Steve Conn was asking board to see about having information on website in Spanish language. Good of the Veterans Jack Petrowsky reported that on the 12th of November the Marines Celebration was having a dance and food at the Elks Club, $25.00 per person at 6:00 pm. Lester Palmer reported that their still in need of more drivers. Mr. Brown reported that the solar lights have been charging this week and will be installed this week so that the flag will have lighting through the night and holidays. Also, looking for price quotes to get the individual service flags installed will give an update as needed. If anyone does have any information on events for Veterans Day, a list could be compiled so it could be attached to the minutes. Larry Orvis motioned to adjourn meeting,and Jack Petrowsky 2nd.
