10-26-2010 Las Cruces Veterans Advisory Board Minutes of October 26,2010 Las Cruces City Hall Open Meeting: The meeting was called to order at 9.00 a.m.,by Travis Brown,City Staff liaison in the absence of a Chairman. He stated that after the election the elected chairman would take over the meeting. Following that was the Pledge of Allegiance. Fred Schneider Member at Large#1 John Muir III Member at Large#2 Vacant (A quorum of appointed members was present) Mr Brown stated that Dolores Estrada would be taking minutes for the Veterans Advisory Board. Steve Pandak Mesilla Valley Community of Hope James Turner NM Department Veteran Services Reading of Minutes: The minutes for the meeting of September 28,2010 were read and amendment by Mr. Burleson was requested to state that Frank Geisel resiipned. Motioned by Mr Petrowsky to amend minutes to state that Frank Geisel resigned,2 by Mr. Angel. Motion passed unanimously 1 Old Business: Veterans Corner on City website will be changed to the new website sometime in Nov.or Dec.by the City's IT(Information Technology)Department. Content will have to be updated after the new City website is operational. Mr.Brown will see if someone at the Fire Dept. can make any suggested changes to the website,for they have to be done by a city department. City's website address is: www.las-cruces.org PIO(Public Information Office)is trying to make space in the Community Connection that will be distributed the first week of November to announce Veteran's Day Events. New Business: Mr. Brown stated that nominations would be taken for election of Chair and Vice-Chair Mr Dasing interjected that he recommended the election of officers be tabled to give DAV the opportunity to participate in the election. That he had submitted his application 5 months ago and it was still not approved. Mr Orvis moved to table the elections until the next month's meeting. Mr Angel 2"d the motion.Motion passed unanimously. Mr Dasing asked why the City Mayor is taking so long to have new members installed to the Advisory Board. Mr. Brown said he would ask City Clerk Esther Martinez about the delay Mrs. Archuleta gave an update on the walking canes that were going to be given out at the Pharmacy in Sam's Club. The Las Cruces Sam's Club would be receiving 60 walking canes which will be distributed on Nov. 10, 11,and 1 e to veterans in need of a walking cane. The canes will be given away on a first come basis. Next Meeting Date: The 23`d of Nov.would be the next regular meeting date. There was discussion if the Board would like to have the date changed being it was Thanksgiving week. Mr Orvis motioned to have meeting date changed to I e of Nov.,Mr.Angel 2n the motion. Motion passed unanimously Mr Brown mentioned that the notices,agendas,and minutes would be e-mailed but,if there is another way you care to receive information then please provide the appropriate contact information. If you could please write down information on the sign in sheet,where it be faxed,mailed,or mailed to place of employment,we could accommodate. Good of the Veterans: American Legion Post 10 reminded that the post has a yard sale the first Saturday of each month from 8:00 a.m.to noon. At the VFW#10124,yard sale this Saturday at the VFW on Valley Drive. NACCP will be having a State Conference Oct.28 and 20—all invited. 2 Nov 2, Vote Amendment#1 and Amendment#4, #1 is to give Desert Storm veterans right to go to college free and#4 to have all veteran organizations to be exempt from paying property taxes. In honor of the Veterans Day, several restaurants will be serving breakfast, lunch or dinner for the Veterans. Marine Corps League puts flags the plots of veterans at Masonic Cemetery and all that can go and help is appreciated will be taking place on Nov 10`x,starting and 1:00 p.m. Marine Corps League on Nov. 6 at Ramada Palms are celebrating their 235th Birthday. Individual tickets are$30.00 and tables sold for$350.00 Mrs.Archuleta reviewed the enclosure she submitted to the agenda that included the following Veterans Day events: Wednesday,Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. concert at St. Paul's Methodist Church,225 W Griggs. Veterans Day 8:00 a.m. Garrison Flag will be raised at the Veterans Memorial Park. 11.00 a.m. a tribute to the Veterans at Onate High School. Also at 11.00 a.m. in Mesilla a tribute to veterans at their Veterans Monument at Ave. de Mesilla_ 1.30 p.m. at Klein Park,the dedication of Flag Pole donated by the Woodmen of World. 4.00 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park,dedication of the wall to Iraq-Afghanistan Veterans. 7.00 p.m. Free Veterans Day concert at Onate High School. Veterans Day Parade—9:00 am on Saturday on Nov 13,2010. Community Organizations: In behalf of the Elks Lodge,Mike Ybarra presented to the Board that the Elks Lodge would like see about having a Memorial,at the Veterans Park and any help and or recommendations would be appreciated. Mr Ybarra was advised to produce an artistic rendering and proposal for the Board to consider Upon approval by the Board the proposal would move forward to City Facilities and then to City Council Mr Ybarra also asked anyone that knows hunters and has any ludes to call him or the Lodge because the hides are used for different items for the Veterans.
