10-25-2011 Las Cruces Veterans Advisory Board Minutes of October 25, 2011 Las Cruces City Hall Open Meeting: The Meeting was called to order at 9:00 am., and was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Brown City of Las Cruces Representative Dolores Estrada Recording Secretary Approval of the Agenda for today's meeting was motioned by Lawrence Orvis and 2nd by James Harbison. All members that are present voted unanimously. Acceptance of the Minutes from regular meeting of Sept 27, 2011 motioned by Larry Orvis and 2nd by Cosme Padilla. All members that are present voted unanimously. Lawrence Orvis motioned to have Minutes amended with corrections and James Harbison 2"d,all members that are present voted unanimously. 1 Old Business Mr. Dasing asked if there were any new events to add to the Veterans Day calendar. Changes were made and new calendar will be distributed to members. Mr. Dasing also reported that the 2°d Engineer Monument dedication will be delayed,will give update when he knows more. Mr. Brown gave update on the Veterans Corner; he will give updates on the progress of the website. If anyone would like to provide anymore information to be added to the website there is still time. The Purple Heart Medallion, the commander was going to attend meeting to present a drawing of the medallion,but was unable to attend. New Business The United Military Women of the Southwest attended last month's meeting about placement of a medallion on the gazebo. Ms. Gaines presented the drawing of the bronze medallion. Cosme Padilla motioned to approve the medallion of United Military Women of the Southwest to place the medallion on the gazebo. Fred Schneider, 2°d the motion, all members that are present voted unanimously. Board meetings: November will be held as usual. December meeting was cancelled. Fred Schneider motioned to have Decembers VAB Board an official holiday for VAB Board,Lawrence Orvis 2°d the motion, all members that are present voted unanimously. Public Participation Xochitl Torres, representative for Senator Udall gave an update on the One Stop Shop. Their department is working with City of Las Cruces, has sites for 2 acre parcels to included existing buildings and parcels of land. Also, BLM land which can be sold at a low rate for public purpose. Also, will give update on replacement facility where veterans can go for cancer treatment since the current cancer center facility is closing, Ms. Torres has not heard anything but,will give updates. Melanie Goodman, representative for Senator Bingaman reported on the Veterans ID Card Act. The Bill was introduced in September by two members of the house, Todd Akins from Missouri and Sylvester Reyes from El Paso, Texas. Currently Veterans ID Cards are issued for retired and medical related discharge. This Bill would require the VA to issue an ID cards for those who don't meet the requirements but, would like to have an identification that confirms that they are veterans. Dolores Archuleta gave an update on Veterans Parade, approximately 60 units that will be participating. The posters for the parade will be ready in a few days and will be distributed to the VFW Post. The next time the Veterans Day will be celebrated 11/11/11,will be in the year 2111. 2 Jackie Williams from the El Paso, VA: there is a new health campaign that any veteran that returns from combat zone within 18 months is asked to report for infectious disease evaluation because of an out break of rabies in Afghanistan. Also, anyone that went to the islands and were expose to above ground testing from 1945-1962 would like those veterans to participate in the Ionizing Radiation Registry. There are now 21 cancers that are related to ionizing radiation. A lot of the WWII veterans are getting very ill and the spouses don't know anything about the benefits that could assist them. Many do that to be reviewed with benefits administration. Joe Martinez, representative for Congressman Steve Pearce reported that the committee met for the Bataan Veterans, there are 26 nationwide and approximately 11 in New Mexico. The veterans' from New Mexico is based on the men of the 200 Coast Artillary. Good of the Veterans Mr. Dasing, stated that if veterans have ID cards they need to be registered, if not when using may run into problems. You can register where ID cards were processed, will be registered nationwide. Also, the United Veterans Council is having a meeting at the American Legion at 7:00 pm on Madrid Ave. American Legion reported will be in the Veterans' Day Parade. Marine Corps League reported on 12 of November the Marine Corp League will host a dance. On 13a' of November, will be having a Toys for Tots containers will be distributed around town. DVA reported they will be in the Veterans' Day Parade also. The president of the DAV will do dedication of"Young Soldiers Do Not Speak"plaque at 11:30 on the l lh. Mr. Brown reported that the lights have been installed on the flag poles at City Hall,there are lights on both the State Flag and American Flag. Will also try and ensure that the American Flag will be flown on Veterans Day via Mr. Gomez of Facilities department. Next project will be installing individual flag poles for all the other branch service flags can be flown. Veteran Day Events: see attachment for events.
