11-22-2011 Las Cruces Veterans Advisory Board Minutes of November 22, 2011 Las Cruces City Hall Open Meeting: The Meeting was called to order at 9:03 a.m., and was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll Call: DAV Chapter 10 Kevin Dasing, Chairman American Legion Post 10 Lawrence Orvis MOAA James Harbison Member at Large#1 John Muir III (Absent) Member at Large#2 Lester Palmer VFW Post 3242 Cosine Padilla Marine Corps League Jack Petrowsky Special Forces Association Frank Lujan (Absent) VFW Post 10124 Darrel Angel, Chair(Absent) Vietnam Veterans Fred Schneider Reserve Officers Association Vacant VFW Post 6917 Vacant (A quorum of appointed member was present) Introduction of Guests: Dolores Archuleta Mayor's VAB Liaison Jackie Williams El Paso VA Robert Ramzy III Retired-Citizen James Turner New Mexico Department of Veteran Services City of Las Cruces Staff: Dolores Estrada Recording Secretary Approval of the Agenda for today's meeting was motioned by Lawrence Orvis and 2"d by Cosme Padilla. All members that are present voted unanimously. Acceptance of the Minutes from regular meeting of October 25, 2011 motioned by Lawrence Orvis and 2"d by Jack Petowsky. All members that areresent voted unanimously. Lawrence Orvis amended changes to minutes, Jack Petowsky 2"dp the motion. All members that were present voted to have the amended changes to the minutes. Old Business Veteran Day after action report, Dolores Archuleta reported the Veterans Day Parade was a success, good weather and turnout. There were approximately 64 groups participated in the parade. James Harbison reported that at Mesilla a Bob Gaines was the speaker and an award Wounded Warrior was presented. Lawrence Orvis said the dedication of"Young Soldiers Do Not Speak"was very nice. Fred Schneider reported that St. Pauls' also, had a pleasant event for the veterans. Ken Dasing mentioned that the university's Air Force ROTC had an event at the 1 university and only 3 veterans were present. Mr. Dasing suggested that next year there needed to be more advertising on events for Veterans Day, so the Board could make announcements that separate chapter meetings. That the public does these events and it was sad to see such a low turnout at these events because no one knew they were taking place. New Business—Nothing to Report Public Participation Jackie Williams reported that the Chief of Nursing was leaving to Iowa, no replacement as of yet. Robert Ramzy just wanted to let the Board know, they were doing a good job. Dolores Archuleta asked if anything was being done for December 7, Pearl Harbor Day. James Turner suggested that the flag was being raised at Veterans Park at 8 am, suggested being master of ceremonies, and would asked Archie Luce and Mayor to give speeches, followed by refreshments. Mr. Turner also reported that there was a good turnout for the raising of the Garrison Flag for Veterans Day and Veterans Park, would give a list of the Garrison Flag days at the next meeting. Next day is December 7b-Pearl Harbor,then Christmas and New Year's. Reminder from Dolores Archuleta that the Centennial Parade would be January 7, 2012 at 11 am, staging would take place at 9:30 at Loretto Towne Center. Good of the Veterans American Legion Post 10-Reminder of list of flying Garrison Flag. MOAA-Planning committee for Pearl Harbor Day for 2012. Vietnam Veterans- Wishing everyone a good New Year and Happy Holidays. VFW 3242-Nothing to report Marine Corps League- Reminder Toys for Tots boxes. Member at Large#2- Still in need of drivers. DAV Chapter 10-Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and a Great New Year. Lawrence Orvis motioned to have meeting adjourned at 9:55 am.
