Donna McClanahan — Representative Pearce's Office MINUTES OF LAST MEETING: Minutes were handed out for October 24, 2006. They were read by all present, JR made change to attendance, Ben Balderama was not present at meeting as indicated in the minutes. A motion by Larry Candelaria to approve, with changes, seconded by Cosme Padilla. Motion accepted, all approved. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Kevin Dasing reported on the Walk of Honor. He advised that we needed to set a deadline for the initial order of bricks, determined to be 01/01/07. Although interest remains high for the brick pavers, people are sitting on their applications. JR advised that the Community Foundation has received approximately 200 applications. Veterans Wall Committee successfully dedicated the Persian Gulf War names for the Veterans Wall on 11/11/06. Turnout was very good, and the wall Committee continues to collect names for all conflicts. OLD BUSINESS: The Veterans Day Parade was a success, starting at Loretto Town Square and ending at Branigan Library, with a short awards ceremony afterwards. The informational pamphlet for Veterans Park was discussed, there will be an initial order of 5,000, Kevin advised that he is still gathering information about all plaques and memorials for the pamphlet, and has asked that all organizations with a memorial at the Veterans Park provide him with information. The statue for Lt. Sackett at the new city hall was discussed, item still open. Garrison Flag dates were discussed, the flag was raised for Veteran's Day and lowered at the completion of the Persian Gulf Wall Ceremony. Kevin discussed the Veteran Museum Project and the Veteran Shelter project, he advised that the items have "stalled", he will continue to try to gather information concerning these projects. Karen from the MV Hospice advised that the touribriefing for veterans on 11/13/06 was a success, she also advised of a Veteran Garden in the works as part of the upcoming expansion. NEW BUSINESS: Kevin and JR discussed the Bulletin Board at Veterans Park, it has been installed and provides information about the park and activities. There are two keys, JR has one, and Paul Roach, chairman of the Veteran Wall Committee, has the other. Will discuss key control at a later meeting. The upcoming Pearl Harbor Day ceremony was discussed, it will be held at City Hall on 12/07/06, and coordinated by VFW 3242. The next Garrison Flag raising will be on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. JR will continue to run announcements in the local paper to try to get the public to participate. Welcome to our newest members, Bob Lory from Reserve Officers Association and Avonale Stephenson, at -large #2, JR advised that he did notify both of today's meeting. New Mexico Bicentennial was discussed, it is not to early to plan ahead, 2112 is just around the corner. There was discussion concerning the Memorial Day Ceremony, the United Veteran Council (UVC) has been discussing same subject and friction has occurred concerning participation and location of events, item still open. GOOD OF THE ORDER: JR advised that it is tax season and veterans are eligible for a $4,000 tax exemption. NMDVS Secretary John Garcia will be in Las Cruces for a mini Town Hall, scheduled for 12/08/06 at the American Legion. VFW Post 3242 will be coordinating the Pearl Harbor Day celebration (previously discussed). They will also host the UVC meetings in the future. Charlie Revie discussed the Medicare law, and other veteran legislation. American Legion will host a New Years Eve Dance, with no alcohol served. There is also a craft fair on the third Friday at the American Legion. LM NEXT MEETING/ADJOURNMENT: Since the next meeting is scheduled for 12/26/06, there will not be a December meeting.
