05-23-2006LAS CRUCES VA ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES May 23, 2006 Meeting called to order at 9.00am ROLL CALL: Members: AMERICAN LEGION POST 10 - Present DAV 10 - Absent MOAA - Present MARINE CORPS LEAGUE - Present ROA - Absent SPECIAL FORCES ASSOCIATION - Present VFW POST 3242 - Present VFW POST 6917 - Present VFW POST 10124 - Absent VIETNAM VETERANS OF AMERICA - Absent AT LARGE #1 -Present AT LARGE #2 - Vacant Guest and Representatives — Rebecca Rizzuti — Senator Bingaman's Office, Leticia Garcia — Senator Domenici's Office, Karen Dahmer — MV Hospice MINUTES OF LAST MEETING: No minutes of April 25, 2006 were available, a quorum was not obtained, no issues were voted on or recommendations made. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Kevin Dasing reported on the museum, veterans park brick project and the transitional homeless shelter, no change. OLD BUSINESS: The official Memorial Day Ceremony was discussed, to be held at Veteran' Park at 10.00am. The river ceremony will take place at 8.00am and the ceremony at Hillcrest Cemetery will be at 9.00am. Veterans Day Parade was discussed and it was noted that a new route will be used this year. The Run for the Wall came through Las Cruces on May 17/18, Ben Balderama reported it went well and they had a good turnout for breakfast at VFW Post 10124 and for the ceremony at Veterans Park. NEW BUSINESS: The Garrison Flag raising for Memorial Day was discussed, should the flag be raised on the actual date or the observed date. It was determined that it would be raised on the observed date, a motion was made by Charlie Revie, 2"a by Larrry Candelaria, 6 for, 1 against. There was a complaint about the Veteran Park dedication plaque, the city will look into that. A VA survey was discussed concerning the level and quality of care at the VA Clinic. A Handicapped van issue was discussed, Rebecca Rizzuti reported that there might be problems with insurance. Further discussion will be needed. There was a motion 0 for the city to provide signs to Veterans Park, motion by Jack Petrowsky, 2nd by Cosme Padilla, motion passed. There was discussion concerning a statue to commemorate the founder of Las Cruces, Lt Sackett, will table at next meeting. GOOD OF THE ORDER: Ben Balderama reported that there will be an `Airborne Fiesta from June29-July 1 in El Paso, TX. Larry Candelaria advised that we need to come up with a calendar of events. Upcoming events include the Electric Light Parade on July 3rd, and the city festivities for the 4 1 of July. NEXT MEETING: Jack Petrowsky made a motion to adjourn, 2nd by Charlie Revie.
