06-24-1997VETERANS AFFAIRS ADVISORBOARD CITY OF LAS CRUCES P.O. DRAWER CLC LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO 88004 24 JUNE, 1997 The board convened at 1300 at the Board Room of Branigan Memorial Library. Roll call was taken. Present were Chairman Joe Heintz, Vice Chairman Warren Rogers, VFW Rep Robert Wiley, DAV Rep Fred Frank, American Legion Rep JJ Dewey. This constituted a quorum. The minutes of the May meeting were approved. Unfinished business: Fred Frank reported that the sign at the Veterans Park had not yet been repaired and repainted and that it was a disgrace to the city. He also proposed that included in the design of the park provision should be made for a building that could be used as a meeting place for veterans organizations. This should be in the long range plans. The Veterans Day Parade Committee is making plans for a Veterans Day parade on Saturday November 8 around the downtown mall. Fred Frank is the chairman. Joe Heintz, Warren Rogers Jesus Zamora and Eldon Cherry are members. Robert Wiley reported that action on permitting video gambling at fraternal and veterans organizations is on hold until the federal government approves casino gambling on Indian reservations. New business: Governor Johnson announced at the government day ceremony on 6 June at the New Mexico Veterans Home in T or C that he had no intention of closing the home. At the next meeting Mel Barlow is to present a report on the status of VA cemeteries in New Mexico. There are questions on this subject because of information put out at the Veterans Tow: Hall meeting here in Las Cruces on 19 JUNE. There being no other business, the meeting adjourned at 1340.
