First LCU Intern Graduates to Full-Time Position (Errol Lockett) Published Sunday,March 1, 2020, in the Las Cruces Sun-News In 2017 the Las Cruces Utilities (LCU) Board of Commissioners approved the initiative to establish a new f LCU Internship Program, due to the increasing difficulty in hiring and �., retaining certified operators. The difficulty is not only felt in Las Cruces and throughout {� New Mexico, but across the ' country. The hope of the Internship Program was threefold: 1) hire and retain competent certified operators who would become invested l LCU employees, 2) help students interested in the water resources industry earn a college degree in Water Technology from Dona Ana Community College (DACC), and 3) provide on-the-job training and income while the students attend DACC classes. William Lindemann, Ph.D. (retired soil science professor) is stopping by New Mexico State University's Fabian Garcia Research Center, a garden area flush with rich soil —very similar to what some local residents might find in their yards if they live in certain parts of town. Lindemann explains, that in Las Cruces,knowing what type of soil is half the battle when it comes to planting. "Some areas have low nutrients that you have to amend with organic matter, and some areas drain excessively," Lindemann said. "Productive planting and harvesting come from knowing your soil before you plant and before you water." Hillrise Elementary Students Meet the Little Robotic Sewer Truck with No Name Published Sunday,March 8, 2020, in the Las Cruces Sun-News The fourth graders from Ken Strawn's social studies class at Hillrise Elementary were ..., jumping up and down in front of the Las Cruces Utilities (LCU) truck. Partly it was just simple excitement to see what they've only heard about - a little robotic sewer truck fitted with a camera that travels our sewers "seeing" any little problems,before they become big. Operators Lonnie Orona and Carlos Almaraz, both LCU wastewater collection inspectors, brought the truck to Hillrise Elementary and set up out front with an extra pipe to let the little sewer truck have a go at above-ground action with an audience of children watching.
